Toolkit IV: Resources
Resources
Modules I & II
Module I — Intergenerational Communication in European SMEs covers the theoretical and cultural background of how different generations (Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z) communicate in the workplace, the EU and national legal frameworks governing age equality at work, the specific communication dynamics in Belgian and Greek SMEs, and practical implementation strategies for cross-generational communication
Module II- addresses the knowledge transfer dimension, specifically how intergenerational mentoring and skills exchange work in practice within SMEs.
Together, the modules provide the foundational knowledge base that enables participants to make meaningful use of all other project outputs — the Skills Matrix, the Learning Methodologies guide, the SME Implementation Guide, and the Mentoring Techniques Guide.
Knowledge Transfer Templates
These templates are essential because knowledge transfer — especially tacit/informal knowledge — is easily lost without structure. InterGen emphasizes that the process must be bidirectional: both generations learn from and share knowledge with each other.
What is a Knowledge Transfer Template?
It is a structured tool/framework that serves as a guide for the systematic transfer of knowledge between individuals or generations within an organization. It is not just a form — it is an action framework that defines:
- What knowledge is being transferred (explicit/documented or tacit/informal)
- How the transfer happens (methods, steps, timing)
- Who learns from whom (mentor → mentee, or bidirectionally)
- What outcome is expected
Where It Is Used in InterGen
Knowledge Transfer Templates are used primarily in three contexts:
1. Traditional Mentoring Where experienced employees transfer knowledge to younger ones — the template ensures the process is systematic, well-paced, and properly documented.
2. Interactive Workshops The Activity Structure Template is used to organize sessions into phases (Opening 15′ → Core Learning 30′ → Group Discussion 20′ → Reflection 10′), each with clear purposes and expected outcomes.
3. Reverse Mentoring Sessions Where younger employees transfer digital skills to older colleagues, using templates that cover tutorial guides, integration templates, and action planning tools.
! Useful Tables and Formats for Knowledge Transfer
The forms and tables operate as the practical execution layer — the hands-on instruments that put those methodologies into action at the individual and team level. The templates define the programme’s framework, principles, and methodology, while the forms and tables are the instruments through which organisations gather the participant data, formalise the agreements, document the knowledge being transferred, track progress, and evaluate outcomes.

Communication Styles
InterGen’s intergenerational communication framework is built on one core insight: understanding how each generation communicates is not a soft skill — it is a strategic advantage.
Rooted in Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), our approach helps individuals and organisations recognise the natural tendency to adapt — or fail to adapt — communication style to the person across the table. Younger employees may default to instant messaging and informal exchanges. Experienced colleagues may prefer structured face-to-face conversations or formal correspondence. Neither is wrong. Both need to be understood.
The Result: A Workplace Where Generations Work With Each Other
When people across generations understand one another’s communication preferences, something shifts. Knowledge flows more naturally between experienced and newer employees. Reverse mentoring works. Cross-generational teams become more than the sum of their parts.
Communication Guides
The InterGen Communication Guides are a series of four practical, ready-to-use handbooks developed as part of the InterGen Communication Toolkit under the Erasmus+ KA210 programme. Each guide addresses a specific theme that is critical for making intergenerational teamwork succeed in small and medium-sized enterprises.
